Description
This one-story turn of the century cottage takes it stylistic clues from the American Colonial Revival. Sheathed in narrow clapboard, the cottage is capped by a hipped roof accented by gables. The eaves are boxed and set off by a friezeboard. Below a front gable, an open porch defined by slender Tuscan columns and a pent roof is centered. Three steps with stone side walls lead to the central entrance. Differently proportioned one-overone double-hung sash windows are located unequal distances from each side of the door. The cottage culminates in a brick chimney which emerges from the ridge of the roof. With the exception of a new front door, the cottage is largely unaltered and in good condition. RESEARCH NOTES: It is assumed that this house was around in 1907 when lot 555 of the Ontario Colony Lands was split. Edwin K. and M.E. Brown were the assessed owners of this parcel from 1908 to 1922. Brown was entered in the directories as a laborer (1907), and a janitor (at the Grammar School in 1909-10 and at the Public Library in 1916- 17). The house does not appear on the 1907 Sanborn.
