*Sharps Handling and Disposal

Safely disposing of household sharps is important. Sharps that are not disposed of safely may cause injury.

Place all sharps in a sharps disposal container immediately after they have been used. This will reduce the risk of needle sticks, cuts, and punctures from sharps.

Never place sharps in trash, recycling, or green waste container. Never flush sharps down the drain or toilet. Doing so may put waste management and sewage workers, custodians, housekeepers, household members, and children at risk of being harmed.

Please separate and remove any items that are not accepted before disposing.

Use sharps disposal containers specifically rated for sharps or other containers approved for use in your location. Examples of other containers may include rigid containers made of heavy-duty plastic, sealable with a tight-fitting lid and puncture resistant. Do not use lightweight plastic, glass, cardboard, or paper containers.

Do Not Reuse Sharps Disposal Containers.

Make Your Own Sharps Container

  • Use 2-gallon in size or smaller hard sided plastic containers such as a bleach or laundry detergent bottle with a secure lid.  Do not use food product containers.
  • Place a label on both sides of the container that identifies "Biohazard".
  • Place your used needles, syringes, and lancets into the container.
  • When 3/4 full, secure the lid and tape the container closed.
  • Do NOT place in trash. Take container to HHW facility.
  • Print FREE labels by visiting https://sbcfire.org/hhw/
  • Preprinted labels are available at HHW collection facilities
