Description

Like others of its age and type, this one-story, turn-of-thecentury cottage owes its design to a hipped roof and square, boxlike proportions. The roof is accented by a central gable containing an attic vent. Slightly extended eaves feature enclosed soffits. Narrow clapboards trimmed with endboards sheathe the structure, which rests on a cobblestone foundation. The entry has been altered and porch enclosed. Slightly offset, it is flanked by double-hung sash windows of different sizes. Other alterations include aluminum awnings, a window ledge, and a brick chimney on the south elevation. The cottage is in good condition. RESEARCH NOTES: Apparently a rental cottage, this improvement was probably made after F.A. Huxtable, who also owned the parcel to the south, acquired the property from the Magnolia Land and Water Company in 1905-06. It had not been built when the 1907 Sanborn was drawn, but is shown on the 1912 edition. None of its succeeding owners over the next fifteen years seemed to have lived there; G.W. Curtis (1909-ll), Jonathon R. Francis (1912-13), and A.H. Johnson (1914 onwards). Arthur Johnson, a grocer, was also a City Trustee; in late 1918 he rented the property to the Olson family.
