Description
Located on the southeast corner of First Avenue and Eleventh Street, this is a one-story Craftsman bungalow. Low-pitched gables with spreading eaves face both the west and north elevations. Plain bargeboards, exposed beams and rafters, and vertical venting in the gable ends characterize the roof treatment. Medium clapboard sheathes the structure, which sits on a stone foundation. Stone is also used for the porch wall and pedestals for elephantine porch posts. The supports carry one of the front gables, offset to the north on the primary elevation. The porch space below the gable has been partially enclosed. At the south end of the space, the entry and a large, fixed-pane window are positioned. A similar window, embellished with a bracketed ledge along the sill, is to the right (south) of the entry. On the south elevation, a stone chimney rises above the building. In fairly good condition, the bungalow has been altered by the porch enclosure and by the addition of aluminum awnings. Another, much smaller and probably later, craftsman-influenced bungalow occupies the rear of the parcel at 142 East 11th Street. It is front gabled, with a contiguous, smaller gable projecting over a front porch. Vertical venting fills the gable end. A pair of plain ports carry the porch roof. Extended lintels top the three facade openings, a central entrance flanked by doublehung sash windows. The clapboarded bungalow is unaltered, with the exception of an iron railing added to the porch. It is in good condition. RESEARCH NOTES: The entire southeast corner of Eleventh and First was part of a single parcel associated with 780 North First. The two houses presently on the corner parcel did not appear on the 1912 Sanborn, although they are drawn in the 1928 map. It is estimated that they were built circa 1920.
