Description
A side gabled roof gently flares out to cover the full front porch of this one-story Craftsman bungalow. A central shed dormer with an unusual snowflake-patterned vent punctuates the roof. Exposed rafters accent the eaves. Set on a cobblestone foundation, the structure is sheathed in medium clapboard. Cobblestone piers rise at the corners of the porch to support the roof. A flight of concrete stairs with cobblestone rails lead to the slightly off-centered door. One-over-one double-hung sash windows to each side of the door overlook the porch. The bungalow is intact and in good condition. RESEARCH NOTES: This parcel was assembled from portions of lots 1 and 2 of the Harwood Brothers subdivision in 1908 by L.A. Spicer, who bought it from the subdividers. Spicer, whose name was associated briefly with numerous pieces of real estate in Upland, turned it over to P.W. Kilgore in 1911. From 1912 to 1919 Grace Silcox was the assessed owner. The first improvement was recorded in 1915; however, the house was illustrated as "233" Campus on the 1912 Sanborn. The outside limits for date of construction seem to be 1908 and 1912. Owners after Grace Silcox included Henry Eller (1919), Albert and Nancy Earnest (1920-21) and Sim and Annie Rose (1922) who are known to have lived there.
