Description
A bellcast hip roof with extended eaves and an enclosed soffit sets the tone for the design of this simple, turn-of-the-century cottage. One-story, the building has been re-sided with asphalt shingles. An attached porch is elevated three steps and capped by a pent roof held up by posts with sawn brackets. The entry, which is offset, and a single double-hung sash window are the only facade openings. The cottage is in fair condition. RESEARCH NOTES: Because the lot books carried no distinction between improvements on a parcel when the assessment was made, it is problematic to date more than one building on a lot. In this case, the origin of 709 North Third is closely tied to that of 263 G Street. This house is shown ("363" G Street) on the 1912 Sanborn. On the 1907 Sanborn, 709 North Third was at this location. One possible construction of these facts is that 709 was built c. 1899 and moved c. 1907 when this house may have been erected.
