Description

Set under the branches of a mature tree on a lot bordered by a white picket fence, this is a one-story Craftsman bungalow. It is cross-gabled, with the front gable topping a central porch. Exposed rafters punctuate the overhanging eaves. Tapered posts on cobblestone pedestals, a crossbeam and exposed joists carry the porch gable. Clapboard sheathes the building, which sits on a stone foundation. The bay defined by the porch contains a door pierced by four lights and a pair of flanking, double-hung sash windows. Additional, larger sash windows are located in the side bays. The bungalow appears to be unaltered and in good condition. RESEARCH NOTES: Guy Bodenhamer was responsible for the erection of this bungalow in 1915-16. A member of a pioneer Upland family, Bodenhammer lived on Fifth Avenue and ran a nursery. Subsequent owners of the house included Nancy J. West (1919) and Thomas and Laura Maxwell (1920-1940s). Maxwell worked in one of the packing houses.
