Description

This tidy turn-of-the-century cottage displays the hipped roof and box-like proportions customary for the genre. A large central dormer is detailed with a crown molding and return and contains a sunburst in its gable face and a large, screened opening. Below a boxed cornice and plain friezeboard the structure is clad in clapboard and sits on a cobblestone foundation. A recessed bay, enclosed by a low wall, spans the facade. Posts define three bays. The entry occupies the center bay while double-hung sash windows are located in the side bays. The only visible alteration to this well-preserved example is the recent addition of brackets from an earlier era to the porch posts. RESEARCH NOTES: Daniel and Jennie Krehbiel, active members of the nearby Mennonite Church, probably built this house around 1905. Daniel Krehbiel was a carpenter; perhaps this was one of his projects. The directories indicate that he lived in the house and long-time residents confirm that the house remained in the family until the 1940s.
