Description

This one-story dwelling is representative of Colonial Revival styling popular around the turn of the century. A simple bellcast hipped roof with friezeboard and boxed cornice crowns the dwelling. Covered with narrow clapboard and edged with endboards, the building rests on a cobblestone foundation. Central steps with stone rails lead to a full front porch tucked underneath the hipped roof. Four Tuscan columns stand on paneled bases linked by a low porch wall. An off-centered door and two double-hung sash windows overlook the porch. The structure is in good condition and without major alteration. RESEARCH NOTES: No conclusive evidence for the exact dating of this house was found. It occupies a portion of lot 32 of the Harwood Subdivision. L.A. Spicer bought all of lot 32 in 1905-06 from the subdividers; this parcel seems to have been split off around 1908, perhaps an indication of impending construction. From 1909 until 1920 the house, known on the 1912 Sanborn as "249," was apparently a rental property owned by Arthur H. Johnson, grocer and city trustee. Subsequent owners included Howard and Elvie Hobaugh (1919) and Hiram and Almira Barager (1920).
