Description
Attractive detailing enlivens the design of this one-story Craftsman bungalow. Capped by a front gable roof, the building sheathed in clapboard and sits on a cobblestone foundation. Bands of fishscale, diamond, and conventional shingles face the gable end, which is pierced by a tripartite, latticed vent. Exposed rafters with rounded ends are visible in the eaves. A low wall and tapered posts define a porch which is recessed across the facade. Above the porch, a paneled frieze spans the three bays articulated by two stairs with stone rails, the entry is offset to the south. Windows with diamond-paned upper sash occupy the side bays. Substantially unaltered, the bungalow is in good condition. RESEARCH NOTES : F.R. Hargroves assumed ownership of this lot in 1909 and the house, which was erected prior to 1912, was probably built not long afterwards. The directories list two "F.R." Hargroves. In 1909-10, 1911 and 1912-13 Frank R. Hargroves, a carpenter, was noted; he lived on the west side of Eighth in latter entries. Then in 1916-17 and 1919-20 ~elix R. Hargrove was recorded. A foreman with the Upland Citrus Association, Felix lived on the west side of 8th in 1916-17 and with his wife Emma on the east side, at 270, in 1919-20.
