Description
Departing from the usual Upland use of cobblestone as its secondary material, this one-story Craftsman bungalow incorporates brick into its design. Sheathed in clapboard, the building is capped by a low-pitched, side gable roof. A dormer vent with a front gable is centered over the facade. Both gables are similarly treated, with exposed and extended rafters and beams. A recessed porch spans the facade, defined by a low brick wall with cement coping. Pedestals of red and clinker bricks carry paired posts and articulate three bays. The left (north) bay has been enclosed by a band of multi-light casement windows. A door in the central bay and windows in the south bay are topped by extended lintels. On the north, a brick chimney rises over the ridgeline. Largely intact and in good condition, the bungalow is complemented by a front flower garden. RESEARCH NOTES: B.P. Swartzendruber and A.O. Hadden, who owned most of Pleasant View tract, were the first two recorded owners of this parcel after subdivision. Louis L. Harms and E.L. Eymann succeeded them in 1912 and were responsible for the construction of this house. Harms, a member of a family active in the Mennonite Church, became the sole owner and was succeeded by Carl Olson in 1920. According to former neighbors, Olson was a retired farmer from South Dakota.
