Description
Trees and shrubbery, including a pair of palms, frame this oneand- one-half story Craftsman bungalow, hiding its details from the viewer. The bungalow is dominated by a front facing gabled roof with extended eaves. The gable face contains a one-over-one double-hung sash window centered beneath a vent. Recessed into the south half of the facade, the porch is occupied by a door lined up beneath the upper window and another window. The porch is defined by two wood posts and a stick railing. Three doublehung sash windows wrap the north half of the facade, with another opening facing the porch. The central window of this cluster as well as the one to the right of the entry have larger lower sashes. Other features include a rusticated stone foundation, clapboard sheathing, and a shed-roofed dormer on the south elevation. Other than a trellis at the south end of the porch, the bungalow appears to be unaltered and in good condition. RESEARCH NOTES: This house had already been built when the 1914 assessment noted an improvement on the property, according to the 1912 Sanborn. After subdivision in 1907 the lot belonged to B.P. Swartzendruber whose name is associated with numerous real estate transactions recorded in the lot books. The next owner was F.W. Williams, a builder, who held title in 1909-10. From Williams it passed to Walter J. and Sarah Wood, who held title from 1911 until 1920. It seems likely that Williams erected the house on speculation and sold it to the Woods, who were located on Campus in the 1912- 13 directories. At that time Wood was a fruit picker or packer: the 1916-17 directory associated him with the firm of Minor and Wood in Cucamonga.
