Description
This typical turn-of-the-century cottage is nearly unaltered. It is one-story, hip roofed, and clad in narrow horizontal siding. A gable framed by a crown molding, boxed cornice return, and a pent roof and finished with octagon shingles, caps the left (north) bay of the facade. Set immediately below the boxed cornice, a single, double-hung sash window is located in this bay. On the south half of the facade, a porch defined by a pair of Tuscan Columns supporting a plain frieze and an extension of roof, is recessed. A re-glazed window and the entry open off the space. The cottage rests on a stone foundation. Neatly landscaped and in good condition, it is a contributing feature of the district. RESEARCH NOTES: Although no information on tax assessments for improvements on this lot were recorded prior to 1915, the change in ownership from T.J. Woodhead, who owned the entire side of the block at least from 1895 to 1904, to Harvey Winger in 1905, is a likely indication of construction. According to the 1907 directory, H.H Winger, pruner, lived on the east side of 2nd between E (Arrow) and F. A circa 1904 date is commensurate with the architectural style of the building. Subsequent residents, according to directories and the Historic Houses and Sites file were: 1912-13 Gochneaur, Jos, student Stauffer, La Verne G. Stauffer, Warren L., carpenter 1924 Hayman, Arlie T. (Eliz; Hayman & Rogers, grocers, 185 2nd) Ross, Charles C. (Lois), lino opr
