Description
A hipped roof and boxy proportions label this one-story residence as a typical turn-of-the-century dwelling. Hipped dormers accent the west (primarily), north and south elevations. Boxed eaves and frieze-boards detail the eaves. The building is covered with narrow clapboards above a continuous sill with wider clapboards below, and is trimmed with endboards. A porch has been recessed into the south half of the facade. Tuscan columns carry the porch roof. Two entries, one oriented perpendicular to the street at the north end of the porch, and another facing the street at the south end, and a three-sided bay are contained within the open porch. The north half of the facade has a single opening, a cottage window with a decorative header. With the exception of one of the doors, the residence appears unaltered. It is in fairly good condition. RESEARCH NOTES : This house does not appear in the assessment record at this location until 1921, or the Sanborns until 1928. Nonetheless, it pre-dates the 1920s stylistically, leading to the assumption that it was moved to this location. Examination of the Sanborns from 1907, 1912 and 1928 indicates that the house now known as 520 was formerly "504" and that it occupied a double lot at the northeast corner of Euclid and Arrow. Apparently it was moved to the north half of the property when a filling station was built in 1921 by Lillie M. Monroe; it had been built in 1898-99 by Della E. Thomas. Shortly after it was moved the house became the residence of August Palis, a jeweler, and his wife Ida.
