Description
This one-story, turn-of-the-century cottage with Colonial Revival influences sits on a stone foundation, a feature found throughout the region. The hipped roof is enhanced by gently flaring extended boxed eaves. The cottage is sheathed in medium clapboard and has plain wood trim around the doors and windows. The cutaway porch in the northeast corner is anchored by a Tuscan column. The porch railing has been replaced by a brick balustrade. In addition to the entry, the porch also contains a single, large double-hung sash window. A similarly proportioned window, which may have been re-glazed, is centered on the south half of the facade. Largely unaltered, this cottage is in fair condition. RESEARCH NOTES : Most likely this house was built by Walter 3. Wood, the first owner after the Magnolia Land and Water Company. Wood, a lemon packer, lived in the house in 1909-10 and 1911, according to the directories. From 1911 Robert F. Goerz was the owner/resident of "267." A rancher, Goerz apparently shared his home with Helen Goerz, the widow of David Goerz.
