Description
This one-story Craftsman bunaalow is built on a cobblestone foundation, sheathed with narrow clapboard and covered by a single front gabled roof. The roof has projecting eaves with exposed rafters. The gabled porch to the far south of the facade is contiguous to the main gable and is supported by tapered wood piers resting on cobblestone pedestals. A solid cobblestone balustrade encloses the porch. Other than the front door and vent in the peak of the gable, only two openings, differently sized double-hung sash windows, pierce the facade. The bungalow appears to be in good condition. RESEARCH NOTES: The assessment record is rather confusing for the parcel. The improvement assessed on the parcel in 1919 had disappeared by 1920, and improvements were not recorded on the property again until 1938. Since the house would appear to pre-date that time and a building with the appropriate footprint is shown on the 1928 Sanborn, it may be possible that some adjustment in the location of the building was made due to the proximity of the Pacific Electric tracks. On the other hand, the first assessed owner who lived in the house did not do so until 1940. Samuel Buckwalter, a carpenter, and his wife Susan were listed in the directory at that address that year.
