Description
Typical turn-of-the-century styling characterizes this one-story residence. Crowned by a bellcast hipped roof, the building is sheathed with clapboards that flare outward when the structure meets the cobblestone foundation. A hipped roof dormer is centered over the facade and contains a pair of latticed vents separated by a window. The northeast corner of the facade is occupied by a recessed porch, enclosed by a low wall and three slender, Tuscan columns. A window with a leaded glass upper sash and the entry open off the porch. To the right (west) the remainder of the facade is filled by a three-sided bay. Another bay is set back on the east elevation. Colonial Revival influenced detailing, in addition to the columns, includes boxed cornices, friezeboard, and a continuous sill molding. Except for the replacement of the front door, the house is unaltered. It occupies a corner lot and is shaded by trees in the parkway along Fourth Avenue. RESEARCH NOTES: This house was either built by Edwin B. Van Wormer between 1905 and 1907 or by Nettie Isaac who purchased the property from Van Wormer in 1907-08. The house does appear on the 1907 Sanborn. In 1912 the two cottages at 167 and 173 N. 4th Avenue, now a separate parcel, had been built in the rear of the property.
