Description

Structural elements are the focal point of this one-story Craftsman bungalow. The main volume of the house is clad in horizontal wood siding and sits under a front gable roof. A second gable tops a projecting porch offset to the north. Overhanging eaves are characterized by bargeboards, exposed rafters, and extended beams. Three tapered wood piers resting on elephantine brick pedestals carry the porch roof and the pergola which extends to the south. The porch is accessed by a wide flight of stairs with brick rails. Double horizontal rails enclose the porch, echoing the beams which are in the open gable ends. A door and a cottage window with a decorative transom overlook the porch, while a cottage window of the same size and design is centered behind the pergola. Set behind a boxed hedge, the bungalow is in good condition and appears substantially unaltered. RESEARCH NOTES: The lot split that resulted, more-or-less, in the present parcel took place around 1911, when the Empire Realty and Mortgage Company was assessed for the property. It seems possible that the house was built on speculation at that time.
