Description
This one-story residence displays the very simple styling of many Craftsman-influenced bungalows built during the 1920s. Erected on a cobblestone foundation, the bungalow is sheathed with narrow clapboard and edged with endboards. Extended eaves detail the side gable roof. An eyebrow-shaped hood supported by pairs of wood brackets draws attention to the centrally located door. A pair of narrowly proportioned sash windows is situated to the south while a square opening is located on the north. Some windows and the front door have been replaced. The bungalow is in good condition. RESEARCH NOTES: This is one of two houses built on lot 9 block 1 of Allens Subdivision of Ontario Colony lot 578. Both houses were built by J.V. and Ada Benson, apparently in 1923-24. Similarities in styling, especially the hood over the entries, are obvious. According to long-time residents, the senior Bensons lived in this house while their son and daughter-in-law occupied the house that faces Washington. Since Jas. V. Benson was a carpenter, it is possible that he actually built the houses.
