Description
Set amidst flowering plants, this is a two-story Craftsman residence. The facade is spanned by a front gable roof, whose beams and rafters are visible in the overhanging eaves. Below vertical venting in the peak of the gable, the building is clapboarded. A friezeboard bands the exterior between stories. Cobblestone is used for the foundation and for battered pedestals at either end of the porch. Stout elephantine ports sit atop the pedestals while a pair of tapered columns frame the central bay of the three-bay, recessed porch. Echoing the proportions of the porch, a screened balcony stretches across the upper facade. Fenestration consists of double-hung sash windows, asymmetrically disposed. Largely unaltered, the residence is in good condition. RESEARCH NOTES: This house post-dates the 1912 Sanborn, when no buildings occupied the site. In 1915, when the lot books resumed recording assessment amounts, the property (which consists of two lots) was under two ownerships, each of which was assessed for an improvement. Perhaps the house was constructed between 1912 and 1915, or perhaps it was built sometime after 1919 (when research information is not available) and before 1928 when the house appears on the Sanborns. The Craftsman styling favors the earlier date.
