Description

A melange of roof forms is the distinctive characteristic of this one-and-one-half story, turn-of-the-century residence. Primarily the roof is hipped, with a central gablet set high over the facade and juxtaposed against another gablet over the east half of the facade and an off-center hipped dormer. Large shed roofed dormers extend to the east and west. Below a boxed cornice and plain friezeboard the house is sheathed in narrow clapboards and trimmed by endboards. A porch once occupied the northwest corner of the house; it has been enclosed. The doorway and a doublehung sash window now open into the space. Another double-hung sash window is centered beneath the east gablet. Altered, the house is in good condition, complemented by its landscaping and by trees in the parkways on Ninth Street and Fourth Avenue. RESEARCH NOTES: This property changed hands numerous times following the Magnolia Land and Water Company ownership up to 1902. Amos G. Allen was assessed in 1903-04 and Maggie Burkholder in 1905 to 1910. The house was built sometime during that period; it appears on the 1907 Sanborn. Subsequent owners included E.H. Reed (1911), F.H. Knox (1912-13), W.H. Smith (1915-17), Edward B. McClair (1918), A.C. Klindt (1919), Ruby M. Bagby (1920), and Ruby M. Baldwin (1922). The Baldwins operated a "Mom and Pop" grocery store on the site in the 1920s; the small masonry building just to the east appears on the 1928 Sanborn and is still there today.
