Description
Art stone detailing distinguishes the design of this boxy, onestory turn-of-the-century residence. The hipped roof sits atop a frieze of narrow vertical boards and is embellished with a central, gabled dormer, notched rafter tails, decorative stickwork and a vent in the gable face. Except for a later porch enclosure, the entire building is sheathed with stone-like concrete blocks. Art stone columns and balustrade define a porch cut into the northwest corner. Four steps with art stone rails lead to a door centered below the gable. The door and all of the windows have been replaced, leaving in place, however, heavy concrete lintels and sills. The residence is in good condition. RESEARCH NOTES: Not unexpectedly, Emsley Robbins of the Upland Stone Company appears to have been responsible for the construction of this distinctive home, a fine advertisement for his business. Robbins purchased the land from the subdividers in 1908 and the house was built sometime between then and 1912, when "365" appeared on the Sanborn.
