Description
A varied roofline is the distingulshing feature of this one-anda- half story turn-of-the-century cottage. The generally hipped roof has two large gablets extending from the top and the southwest corner, both of which are faced in fishscale shingles. Bargeboards flare out slightly at the ends. A hipped dormer, aligned with the offset front door, adds another interesting detail. Below a denticulated cornice, clapboard siding edged with endboards sheathes the cottage, which rests on a stone foundation. Stonework also forms a balustrade around the recessed porch. The cottage is intact and in good condition. RESEARCH NOTES: Both this house and the American Foursquare residence at 403 N. Campus Avenue occupy what was historically one parcel. Based on the available evidence, it is impossible to tell which house was erected first. The Campus address was the home of J.J. Voth, who was closely associated with the Mennonite Church. On the basis of style, this house estimated to date to circa 1906-07.
