Description
The simplified craftsman style of the 1920s is evidenced by this one-story bungalow. Capped by a low-pitched side gable roof, the structure is sheathed with clapboards and trimmed with endboards. Rafters are exposed in the eaves. A porch topped by a front gable projects from the center of the facade. Vertical venting faces the gable end. Slightly tapered posts on pedestals carry the porch gable. A glazed door is centered between them on the facade. Strict symmetry is avoided by the extension of the porch by means of a railing to the right (south) and by variations in glazing of the windows which are equally spaced to either side of the porch. In good condition with no apparent alterations, the bungalow contributes to the integrity of the district. RESEARCH NOTES: T.J. Woodhead owned this property, as well as all others on the block, until Claude Miller purchased it in 1920 or 1921. In 1922 a $500 improvement is recorded on the lot. According to the 1922-23 directory, Miller and his wife lived here for only a year; in 1924, Miller, a salesman, resided at 1055 East 10th St. The 1923 assessment named Arlington T. Hayman, a grocer, who lived next door at 520.
