Description

This one-story turn-of-the-century residence draws on the Colonial Revival tradition for its architectural inspiration. The hipped roof features a central shed dormer containing a triple window. Below the boxed cornice and friezeboard, the clapboarded structure is detailed with endboards and continuous sill. It sits on a cobblestone foundation. Three Tuscan columns with pronounced entasis stand on a low clapboard wall to enclose the veranda which wraps the southwest corner of the structure. The space is topped by a pent roof. A central, glazed door and one-over-one double-hung sash windows open off the veranda. Next to the veranda, the north half of the facade is filled by a bay window. No major alterations to this well-maintained residence were observed. RESEARCH NOTES: This house may have been built as early as 1905-06. Harry A. Chaffee was the owner of the property, then a double lot, from 1906 to 1911. Chaffee, a pioneer Upland resident who came to Upland with his family in 1893, was a machinist and auto mechanic. He operated a garage before leaving Upland for Compton in 1913. He was also known as the man who made the first thousand sole plates for the newly opened Hotpoint Flatiron factory in Ontario. The next owner, Ralph Robson, a rancher, actually lived in the house, according to the 1912-13 directory.
