Description
Although the porch of this one-story bungalow has been altered, it retains much of its Craftsman styling. Massed under two front-facing gables, the structure is covered with narrow clapboard and rests on a cobblestone foundation. The smaller gable crowns the now-enclosed porch. Both gables feature vertical slatting in the apex, overhanging eaves, exposed rafters, and extended beams. Battered cobblestone pedestals carrying tapered wood piers frame the enclosed porch. Four steps with stone rails lead to the entry. Two pairs of casement windows open onto the porch while a pair of one-over-one doublehung sash windows occupy the north portion of the facade. The bungalow is only in fair condition. RESEARCH NOTES: This house historically occupies the same parcel as 441 N. Campus, and, as of 1923, the two properties had not been split up. Both houses had been built by the time the 1928 Sanborn was published; however, this side of Campus was not drawn for the 1912 maps. On the basis of style, the bungalow has been dated circa 1910. It may be as early as 1907, the date assigned to 441, or their histories may be reversed.
