Description

A familiar turn of the century vocabulary informs the design of this one-story cottage. Narrow clapboard encloses the body of the structure which sits on a cobblestone foundation. A bellcast hipped roof atop a boxed cornice and friezeboard caps the cottage. It is accented by central gablets containing vents over the front and side elevations. Three steps with stone rails lead to a full front porch which is recessed across the facade. Turned wood posts and an open stick railing reflects a Queen Anne heritage. An off-centered door is flanked by a double-hung sash window on the left (north) and a window with a transom on the right. Wide wood surrounds, endboards and a continuous sill provide the finishing details to the design. The structure is intact and well-maintained. RESEARCH NOTES: Charles B. Speck obtained this lot from subdivider A.G. Allen in 1907-08, and apparently constructed this home shortly thereafter. The 1909-10 directories identify him as a contractor and plasterer living at this location on Campus. He was still at this site in 1919-20 when the entries also included the name of his wife, Nellie. The 1912 Sanborn indicates that a former address for this property was 376.
