Description

Larger in scale than many of its neighbors, this is a one-andone- half story Craftsman residence. It is capped by a fairly steeply pitched side gabled roof accented by a large front gable to the south and a hipped dormer containing a tripartite window to the north. The face of the gable is occupied by three oneover- one double-hung sash windows in the center, a small window to the right (north), and an oval vent piercing the peak. A central recess contains two entries; one may be an alteration. The older of the two doors is paneled, glazed, and flanked by a narrow, three-quarter length sidelight. Perpendicular to it, the secondary door is a fifteen-light casement and opens south into a space banded by windows. Although it appears that this is a former porch, the 1928 Sanborn indicates that it had been enclosed by that year. On the north a window with a decoratively paned upper sash is centered under the dormer. Located behind a solid fence, the house is in fair condition. The absence of a porch and the presence of asphalt shingle siding indicate the dwelling has been altered. RESEARCH NOTES: The Harwood Brothers, who subdivided this tract, sold the property on which this house stands to H.S. Williams around 1907. Williams, a carpenter, lived on the west side of Campus according to the 1907 directory; it is assumed that he had built this house shortly after acquiring the property. R.E. Chamberlain was the assessed owner in 1910. He lived on Ninth Street in 1909-10. Lulan S. Morse, the proprietor of Upland Table Supply, was the next owner/resident (1911-12). Beatrice L. Decker, the bookkeeper of Upland Feed and Fuel, acquired the house in 1914. She lived across the street in 1914 but was shown at this location in the 1916-17 directory.
