Description
Although modestly sized, this one-story Craftsman bungalow is a good illustration of the Craftsman vocabulary. A pair of lowpitched front gables cap the structure, the front gable projecting over an attached porch. Shaped brackets and exposed rafters are in the overhanging eaves. Clapboard laid in alternating courses of narrow and medium sheathes the structure, emphasizing its horizontal massing. The porch is defined by four heavy, cobblestone pedestals which carry tapered posts. A horizontal railing links the pedestals while a crossbeam, overlaid with joists perpendicular to it, connects the posts. Slightly extended lintels top the windows and door which open off the porch. The south elevation features a stone chimney and a stained glass window. Apparently unaltered and in fairly good condition, the bungalow sits on a stone foundation. RESEARCH NOTES: The outside dates for the construction of this house are 1912, when an empty lot was shown in the Sanborn, and 1915, when a $535 improvement assessment was recorded. Perhaps Henry P. Swaim, who acquired the property in 1914, was responsible for the construction. Subsequent owners included Fred C. Froehde (1919) and dentist W.R. Farmer and his wife Hazel (1919).
