Description
This variation on the turn-of-the-century prototype is nearly symmetrical, with a gablet centered over the facade. A bellcast hipped roof tops the clapboarded structure which sits on a cobblestone foundation. Colonial Revival features include a boxed cornice, a round-headed vent in the gablet, and Tuscan columns which define the porch. Recessed into the southwest portion of the facade the porch is enclosed by a low wall. It contains the entry, which is centered below the gablet, and a single, double-hung window. The eastern third of the facade is glazed, and may have originally been a continuation of the open porch. Like the other homes on the north side of Ninth Street, this house sits on a slightly elevated lot bordered by a stone curb. It is in good condition and substantially altered. RESEARCH NOTES: The Sanborns demonstrate that this house appeared on its lot between 1907 and 1912, although apparently none of its owners lived on site until the early 1920s. M.F. Spicer was the property owner during the years of probable construction. He was succeeded by M.F. Palmer, A.B. Chowning, David Bradfield, and Ola and George Pearson. Bradfield, a bookkeeper with Upland Lemon Growers Association lived at "549" with his wife Elva, according to the 1924 directory. Subsequently, numerous members of the Pearson family also lived in the house.
