Description
Although substantially altered, this two-story residence retains traces of its American Foursquare styling. A hipped roof with an enclosed soffit caps the building, whose original wood siding has been replaced by stucco. Centered over the facade, a dormer vent also has a hipped roof, accented by paired, shaped brackets in the soffit. Between stories, a pent roof wraps the facade, probably indicative of the original configuration. The porch has been enclosed. Some original sash remain. A balcony above the porch may also echo an original feature. On the north another entry and a staircase have been added. The building is in fair condition. RESEARCH NOTES: This house was moved to this location from 507 North First Street in the early 1960s. It was built in 1902-03 by Katie L. Palmer, who had acquired the property from Maude Sherwood. After one year's ownership by Mary Frownfelter, J.F. Monroe began a lengthy tenure as owner. When it was moved, the structure was owned by Mr. and Mrs. D.J. Engle. Engle was the founder of the Arrow Dairy. The eleven-room house was converted into apartments when it was relocated.
