Description
A well-preserved and above average example of Craftsman design
this is a one-story bungalow with a markedly horizontal
orientation. The side gable roof is low-pitched and accented by
a central, shed dormer. Extended beams with shaped ends project
from either side of the dormer, which contains a broad,
tripartite, latticed vent. Exposed rafters punctuate the
overhanging eaves. Recessed across the facade, the porch is
notable for its lack of intermediate supports of the roof
overhang. Battered cobblestone pedestals of uncoursed masonry at
each end of the facade carry paired posts. Lower pedestals flank
three broad steps that lead to the central entry. A stone wall
encloses the porch space. The entry consists of a door with an
oval light and a wood-framed screen which is framed by sidelights
glazed with art glass. A battered surround is crowned by an
extended lintel.
This bungalow is notable for its architectural quality which
arises substantially from the beauty of its stonework. Not
unsurprisingly, the house may have been built by William White, a
stonemason. White took possession of the property in 1912,
succeeding D. Levely. The 1912-13 directory indicates that White
lived in the house, which was also included in the 1912 Sanborn.
Similar casing characterizes the tripartite windows to either
side of the entry. Diamond patterned tracery embellishes the
upper sash. A stone chimney emerges from the roof near the north
end of the ridgeline. Unaltered, in good condition, and
complemented by landscaping, the bungalow contributes to the
streetscape and the district.
