Description

Although related in original design to its neighbor to the south, this one-story, late Craftsman bungalow has been altered. The clapboarded building is topped by a low-pitched, side-gable roof whose rafters are exposed in the overhanging eaves. Another gable, facing front, defines a small, offset front porch. The porch piers have been replaced. A double window is set into the facade to the north of the entry, while the south wing, which may have been extended, features windows at either end. A pierced, cement block wall creates a patio in front of this wing. The bungalow is in good condition. RESEARCH NOTES: T.J. Woodhead owned this lot along with the rest of the block until 1920 when ownership passed to Arvilla A. Copenhaven, according to the old lot books. The first improvement on the lot ($300) occurred in 1923 when Daisie M. Ross was listed as the owner. In the 1922-23 directory, the residents at the address were Jay M. and Olive E. Ross. Ross was the proprietor of the Ross Auto Electric Shop at 326 Second Avenue. This house is notable for its association with a pioneer Upland family, the Burkholders. The current (1990) owner, Rev. Alvin C. Burkholder, was born in Upland in 1907, the son of Bishop C.C. Burkholder. The elder Burkholder was the founder of the Brethren Church; the son assumed his father's duties as minister following his death in 1931. Alvin and his wife Vera purchased this house the same year.
