Description
An exceptional example of Craftsman styling, this is a one-story
bungalow in which cobblestone is integrated into the design. The
building is capped by a side gable and sheathed with wide
clapboards. A shallow, shed-roofed dormer containing a triple
window is centered over the facade. The long leg of an L-shaped
porch is recessed across the facade with the short leg on the
east elevation. Battered cobblestone pedestals carrying paired
posts and linked by a horizontal railing define the space. Cutoff
crossbeams set perpendicular to each other form "capitals"
for the posts. The entry is centered, sit back from the four
steps which descend from the porch to a cement path. Protected
by a wood-framed screen, the dark wood door is paneled and
pierced by four lights containing beveled glass. It is flanked
by a broadly proportioned window on the west and a tripartite
window of similar scale on the east.
This house is significant for its integrity and its architectural
quality. It was built between 1907 and 1912, according to the
Sanborn maps. The principles of Craftsman design, including
respect for natural materials and exposed structural elements
which are exploited for their inherent beauty and a design
intended to integrate building harmoniously into the landscape,
are well illustrated by the house. The use of cobblestone is
especially effective and reiterates the theme which unifies much
of historic Upland.
All of the openings have slightly extended lintels with angled
corners and battered surrounds. Other notable features include
cobblestone foundation and a stone chimney on the west elevation.
An open trellis encloses the east end of the porch, otherwise the
bungalow is substantially intact and in good condition. It is
complemented by its landscaping, which includes a mature palm
tree and a stone-and-cement curb bordering the front lawn.
