Description
Located at the northwest corner of
this is an attractive example of a
Ninth Street and 5th Avenue,
one-and-one-half story
Craftsman bungalow. A side gable caps the structure, accented
a centered shed dormer containing three, small double casement
windows. Exposed rafters are visible in the eaves. The building
is sheathed in clapboard and sits on a stone foundation. In the
center of the facade, four steps with concrete side rails lead
the former porch. Now the west half of the space is enclosed
the east half screened; three doors open off the recess between
the wings. No other major alterations were observed. In good
condition, the bungalow sits behind a lawn bordered by a stone
cart and punctuated by evergreen trees.
This parcel was once part of a much larger property; its present
dimensions (except for seven feet) date to 1906. The owner,
beginning in that year, was William K. Beattie. Beattie was the
assistant manager of the Stewart Citrus Association in 1907. He
became the manager by the time the 1912-13 directory was issued.
Other members of the Beattie family included wife Violet and
daughter, Dorothy Jean. Over the years this house has had
several addresses. In the 1912 directory it was referred to as
"2 west of 5th." This was because Fifth Avenue did not cut
through the north side of Ninth and there was a house next door
to the east which was removed between 1912 and 1928. Address
numbers have included "599" (1912 Sanborn), "583" (1916-17
directory) , and "591" (1928 Sanborn) .
