Description
Craftsman elements enliven the design of this hipped roof, turnof- the-century type bungalow. Narrow width clapboarding sheathes the structure, accented by endboards above a sill course. Above the boxed cornice a small gable, covered with octagon shingles and pierced with a vent, tops the right (north) bay of the facade. The larger south bay is occupied by a partially recessed porch. An extension of the roof caps the space and is supported by tapered piers sitting on battered cobblestone pedestals. A cobblestone porch wall further defines the space, which is elevated three steps from the front yard. Plainly framed doublehung sash windows are located in each bay, and the double entrance is more or less centered on the facade. No major alterations to this well-maintained home were observed. RESEARCH NOTES: J.B. Shughart owned this property from 1895, when the ownership transferred from the Harwood Brothers, until at least 1919. Although no assessment amounts were recorded for the property until 1915, when the improvement was $375, descendants of C.C. Burkholder indicate that was the builder of the cottage in 1901. The year is appropriate for style. Shughart was included in city directories as early as 1898 when he was shown as a rancher living in North Ontario.
