Description
Attractive detailing enhances this one-and-one-half-story Craftsman bungalow. It is sheathed with clapboard, erected on a cobblestone foundation and capped by a front facing gabled roof. Triangular brackets carry the extended eaves. A focal point of the design is the combination of conventional, fishscale, and diamond shingles which sheath the gable face. Another highlight is porch which is recessed across the facade. Approached by four steps with cobblestone rails topped by concave cement coping, the porch is defined by two cobblestone piers and a low stone wall. Arched openings in the stonework accommodate drainage. Fenestration includes a glazed entry with sidelights at the south end of the porch and a double-hung sash window at the north. The gable end contains a central opening flanked by louvered vents. The structure is intact and in good condition. RESEARCH NOTES: This house was the home of Perry and Eva Long, who purchased the property from subdivider Amos G. Allen in 1909-10. In the 1912 Sanborn the house is shown as "444." The directories identify Long as the proprietor of a "first class sanitary barber shop, hat and cold baths, 232 2nd Ave."
