Description
This two-story home reflects early
Craftsman stylistic tendencies. A
fairly steep front-gable with enclosed soffits and
only a slight overhang caps the structure. The gable face is
vented at the peak in a diamond pattern, with courses of
fishscale and conventional shingles below. Separated from the
gable end by a flat molding and a band of vertical siding, the
second story is sided with staggered square butt shingles. A
pair of double-hung windows are symmetrically placed. Spanning
the clapboarded lower level, an attached porch is topped by a
front gable of much shallower pitch. Posts and a porch wall
define the space. The entry is located at the west end while a
pair of openings, now covered with a security grille, are
centered in the east portion. Set behind a lawn edged with a low
cement retaining wall, the house is in good condition.
RESEARCH NOTES:
Originally "601"(505), "613" (511), and "629" (535) all occupied
one large parcel, according to the 1912 Sanborn. This house was
not there in 1907, thus it must have been built between the
publication of the two maps. Since its styling points to an
early date, it is assumed to have been built or moved on site
circa 1907. According to the recollections of long-time
residents, Jesse Brown, a teacher at Fannie D. Noe School, lived
in the house in the early 1920s. The lot split did not take
place until 1938, when the owners were Horace and Emma Appleburg.
Horace Appleburg was described as a laborer in the 1940 directory
entry.
