Description
One of the most singular buildings in Upland, this is a two-story
brick apartment house. Its vernacular appearance is faintly
reminiscent of the Southern Colonial Revival, due to a-two-story
veranda centered on the facade. Slender columns define three
porch bays; they are echoed by posts carrying a pent roof over
the balcony above the porch. A stick railing encloses the porch,
broken in the center to allow for access to the central glazed
entry. Double-hung sash windows flank the door, which is framed
by sidelights and a transom. A band of vertical siding forms a
sort of "frieze" around the porch. Fenestration on the upper
facade consists of triple casements in the side bays flanking a
central doorway. The combination of double-hung sash and tripled
casements characterizes the side elevations. Above a skirt roof,
a plain parapet shields the roof. The building sits on a
cobblestone foundation towards the east side of a large lot, with
ample front and side yards. In fair condition, it appears unaltered.
This building is notable for its qualities which make it unique
in Upland. It was originally a boarding house, labeled "Rooms"
on the 1928 Sanborn. That function is still strongly suggested
by the unusually urban appearance of the building. Masonry
construction, also rare in the vicinity, reinforces this
impression. The building was the second improvement on the lot.
Both the original house and the rooming house were probably built
by contractor R.C. Williams, the property owner beginning in
1906. Williams, his wife Emma, his brother Fred, and other
relatives were substantial property owners in the district.
