Description
A familiar, turn-of-the-century vocabulary informs the design of this one-story cottage. A hipped roof with a boxed cornice gives the structure its square shape. A pair of entrances at right angles to each other and a one-over-one double-hung sash window overlook a cutaway porch on the north half of the facade. Another sash window is centered on the south half of the facade. A Tuscan column at the corner, a wood post and stick railing define the porch. Narrow clapboard edged with endboards sheathes the cottage, which rests on a stone foundation. The cottage is intact and in good condition. RESEARCH NOTES: This property passed through the hands of T.J. Woodhead, Charles J. Allen and Amos G. Allen, all of whom were deeply involved in real estate in Upland, before 1906, when it was assessed to Victoria Hoffman. A transfer to Mary C. Winger was made 1906-07, beginning in 1909, the owner is Mrs. Mary C. Springer. This corresponds with the first directory reference found to the property when C. Springer, retired, and A.C. Springer, carpenter, lived on the west side of Third in the second house north of Tenth Street (Arrow Highway). The house is shown as the only building on the west side of Third between "E"(Arrow) and F on the 1907 Sanborn.
