Description

Cobblestone adds a distinctive note to this one-story, Craftsman bungalow. The building is gabled, with a front gable topping a porch which spans the facade, Although the porch has been enclosed the cobblestone wall and piers and tapered posts remain. The stonework continues past the building on the south to define a side entry. Next to it, a stone chimney rises up the south elevation. Jagged edges characterize the stonework. Stylistic details include exposed rafters and braces in the eaves and unusual vents with a perforated pattern within a grid in the gable ends. Medium clapboard sides the original portion of the house while board and batten appear on the porch enclosure. The entry is located at the north end of the facade. In good condition, the bungalow is complemented by trees and shrubbery. RESEARCH NOTES: Comparison of the 1912 Sanborn and the assessments record indicates that this house was built between 1912 and 1915. Its owners during that period were E.A. and A.J. Lawrence (1912), R.R. Nisely (1913) and L.D. Smith (1914-19). Louis D. Smith, a teacher at the grammar school, lived in the house. He was succeeded as owner by Harry Dilts (1919-21) and Harlan P. and Charlotte S. Confer (from 1922).
