Description

A well-maintained example of a turn-of-the-century residence, this building is one-story, hip-roofed, and clapboard sided. Roof details include a central gablet and a hipped dormer, both containing vents in a perforated design, and boxed cornices accented by brackets. An L-shaped porch wraps the southeast corner of the building. The recessed space is defined by a low wall with vertical siding on which Tuscan columns sit. At the north end of the porch the entry is centered below the dormer. A very tall and narrow double-hung sash window is located to the left (south) of the door. Another entry faces east from the end of the south wing of the porch. A pair of even narrower sash windows occupy the northern portion of the facade. The building is trimmed by endboards and a continuous sill. Alterations include the porch railing and brick porch stairs. RESEARCH NOTES: This house appears on the 1912 Sanborn although stylistically it precedes that date. It may even pre-date the subdivision of the tract in 1908. Assessed owners after A.G. Allen, the subdivider, include Charles L. Jackson (1910-21) and R.W. Hood (from 1922). Jackson was described as a boxmaker in the 1912-13 directory and as an employee of the Hot Point Electric Heating Company in Ontario in the 1914 directory. He lived in the house, which was known as "581" according to the 1912 Sanborn.
