Description
This straightforward, Craftsman bungalow is one-story, sidegabled, and sided with clapboard. Rafters are visible in the eaves. A porch is recessed across the facade, defined by tapered stucco piers at each end which are linked to pedestals in the center by a double horizontal railing. The pedestals are located at the top of three stairs which lead to a central entrance. It is flanked by fairly broad, single sash windows. The building sits atop a cobblestone foundation and is substantially unaltered. It is in good condition. RESEARCH NOTES: This property was a nearly empty lot in 1912, according to the Sanborns. However, the 1912-13 directory listed its owner, Reverend Michael Horsch, living on Eighth, five north of Tenth. But this description applied to the house to the north, also owned by Horsch. Since that lot, which contains a house stylistically associated with the turn-of-the-century, had no improvement on it according to the assessment record, it seems that the record flip-flopped the two properties belonging to Horsch. The northern house was also shown on the 1912 Sanborn despite the lack of an improvement documented on it in the lot books. Moreover, this house (585) in stylistically akin to 530 which was built in 1923. Since the assessment indicates new construction for the other Horsch property in 1923, is assumed that the date can be applied to 585 N. 8th as well.
