Description
This one-and-one-half story residence has turn-of-the-century characteristics. Gables facing both front and side cap the clapboarded structure. Boxed cornices, endboards, and a continuous sill trim the siding. A closed front gable containing a single double-hung sash is located over the north half of the facade. Below a pent roof a porch is attached. Turned columns on brick pedestals support the roof. Both the brick pedestals and porch foundation, the iron railing, and the stone staircase leading to the porch are alterations. An offset door, also a replacement, is flanked by double-hung sash windows. The building occupies the southwest corner of Eighth and Arrow, and the northern frontage is marked by a low stone fence punctuated by pedestals. The house is in good condition. RESEARCH NOTES: The history of this home is confusing. It clearly pre-dates the 1923 assessment date for the improvement. Moreover, it appears on the 1912 Sanborn. The solution to the problem lies in the assessment for the house next door, 585 North Eighth Avenue. Historically, both houses had the same owner, the Reverend Michael Horsch. The assessment record for the adjacent house indicates that it predates 1915, which the evidence of architectural style and the 1912 Sanborn, which pictured an empty lot, contradict. Apparently the assessment records of the two lots were switched. This house probably dates to circa 1903, when the Mennonite Church was organized in Upland. Michael Horsch was one of the founding members and the first pastor of the congregation. He served two terms in this capacity, 1903-1914 and 1918-1927. Horsch was born in Germany in 1872 and came to America in 1888. His path west took him to the Mennonite Seminary in Kansas and to Oklahoma, as a missionary with the Cheyenne Indians. He came to California for the health of his wife, Tillie. The Horschs had three children, Lucas, Monica, and Ruth. They lived in this house at least until the mid-twenties.
