Description
This turn-of-the-century cottage sits next to a tall pine tree at the corner of Ninth Street and Sixth Avenue. It is hip roofed, clapboard sided, and rests on a cobblestone foundation. A gablet containing a vent is centered over the facade. The northwest corner of the structure is occupied by a recessed porch. Turned wood columns, one free-standing and one engaged, define the ends of the otherwise unenclosed space. An entry and a two-over-two double-hung sash window opens off the porch. Another double-hung sash window is centered on the east half of the facade. No major alterations to this well-maintained cottage were noted. RESEARCH NOTES: This house was built sometime between 1900, when the Magnolia Land and Water Company was assessed for the land only, and 1912, when the Sanborn maps began documenting east of 6th Avenue. It was probably constructed either for Mary D. Sharr, the owner in 1903 to 1905, or for Mrs. L. Johnson, the owner from 1906 to 1909. Subsequent owners R.L. Silcox and J.H. Byer like the earlier title-holders, apparently did not live on the property.
