Description
An American Foursquare residence occupies the northeast corner of Ninth Street and Sixth Avenue. Two stories, it is capped by a hipped roof accented by central gablets containing circular vents. Beneath a boxed cornice, the building is clapboard sided. Beneath a pent roof, a now enclosed porch wraps the west and south elevations. Three steps with cobblestone rails and concave cement coping lead to a centered door. Two double-hung sash windows are widely spaced on the upper story on the front and west elevations. Fenestration in the porch is probably not original and consists of tripartite openings. Lattice skirting hides the foundation. In good condition, the building is accented by a palm and other mature trees. RESEARCH NOTES: E.H. Haury, proprietor of Uplands Variety Store, owned the house in 1908; it remained in his family until the 1970s. Located at 261 Second Avenue, the store was listed in the directory as "The Bargain Center: Dry Good's and Men's Furnishings, Etc.." Previous owners of the property included S.E. Spicer, a builder, B.P. Swartzendruber, and J.B. Winger.
