Description
This one-story turn-of-the-century cottage incorporates American Colonial Revival influences into its symmetrical design. Covered with narrow clapboard, the bungalow rests on a cobblestone foundation. The hipped roof is accentuated by a central gablet and a boxed cornice. An arched vent with latticework pierces the face of the gablet. Steps with cobblestone rails lead to a central recess which is clad with board and batten and contains an offset entry. Pairs of one-over-one double-hung sash windows are located at the corners of the facade. Although a porch across all or part of the facade would have been typical, it is unclear from the fenestration whether one was originally used on the building. Comparison with its neighbor at 671 indicates what the porch would have looked like. It is in good condition and is set back behind a stone bordered front lawn. RESEARCH NOTES: Probably built around 1907, this home was the resident of the William Redmon family. Redmon was a laborer in 1909-10, the city night watchman and health officer in 1912-13, and a policeman in 1916-17. Sarah Redmon, who was the assessed owner in 1919, ran a convalescent facility in the house. In 1912, when the Sanborn maps extended east of Sixth, the property contained two ten structures and its address was "771." By 1928 it was "753."
