Description
Similar to 594 East Ninth Street, this is a one-story, turn-of-the- century cottage. Its hipped roof is varied by a front gable over the west half of the facade and a central, crowning gablet. Half octagon shingles face the gable ends which contain vents. A pent roof closes the west gable, below which a slightly recessed porch is filled by a paneled door and sidelights. On the east, a pair of two-over-two double-hung sash are widely spaced. Horizontal siding sheathes the structure. Alterations include the porch and the entry. The cottage is in good condition. RESEARCH NOTES: Neighbors Mrs. Emma Williams and J.C. Mehl owned this property in 1906 and 1907-1912. It passed then to members of the Beutler (or Butler or Bentler) family. B. Howard Engle gained title in 1919 and his family lived in the house into the 1940s. Mr. Engle was in the construction business with his brother-in-law, Harry Cooley, and then worked for Kaiser Steel.
