Description
A front gable roof with a boxed cornice caps this one-and-one-half story residence. Clapboarded, it was originally spanned by a porch beneath a pent roof. The east half of the porch has been enclosed, but the west half retains its plain wood posts and stick railing. A pair of oversized one-over-one double-hung sash windows occupy the face of the gable while a triangular vent fills in the peak. Centered below the windows in the porch, the entry contains a glazed and paneled door. A two-story wing is visible in the rear. Altered by the two-story addition and the porch enclosure, the residence is in fairly good condition. RESEARCH NOTES : This house and its neighbor to the east belonged to members of the Williams family. Although Mrs. Emma Williams was assessed for this property in 1906-1919, she may have actually lived next door at 696. Clara Williams was the owner in 1919; she appears to have lived in both houses. Over the years, members of the family who lived in the house variously described as the first or second house west of Campus were: Miss Clara Williams, teacher; Delos Williams, carpenter and Fred W. Williams, contractor. F.W. Williams was in partnership with his brother R.C., first as contractors and builders, then in a planing mill. In 1912-13 W.M. Dundas became a partner in the mill.
