Description
This turn-of-the-century cottage reflects its Queen Anne heritage in the design and detailing of the facade. The main volume of the clapboarded cottage sits under a hipped roof crowned by a small gablet. A second gablet is located on the west elevation. Diagonal siding is pierced by latticed vents in the gable faces. A rounded porch bay projecting from the southeast corner adds another element to the roof configuration. The roof is finished with a friezeboard and boxed cornice. Tuscan columns and stick railing define the porch which is recess across the facade. An offset entry is flanked by one-over-one double-hung sash windows. Molded lintels and lug sills detail the fenestration. Resting atop a cobblestone foundation, the cottage is intact and in good condition. RESEARCH NOTES: It is assumed that this cottage was built shortly after the property left the ownership of the Harwood Brothers, the subdividers, did L.A. Spicer, their successor. Subsequent owners included Jonathan Robert (1908-lo), N.J. Haurer (1911-16) and Thomas Evans (from 1917).
